How Can I Be Considered for Membership in the Academy of Distinguished Teaching?

The ADT will accept applications for consideration each year after the Annual Celebration of Teaching has taken place (usually held in mid-to-late spring quarter). Applicants will be notified by the end of spring quarter whether they have been approved to join ADT. If accepted, applicants will join ADT beginning in the fall quarter of the following academic year.

Please be advised that membership in the Academy of Distinguished Teaching requires: 1) active participation in at least 1 ADT subcommittee (e.g., awards, workshops, etc.) per academic year and 2) regular attendance at monthly meetings.

There are two potential routes to be considered for nomination into the Academy of Distinguished Teaching:

  • Winners of ADT Teaching Awards: Each year, the top-scoring candidate in each award category (based on ADT’s scoring rubric) will be invited via email from the Chair of ADT to be considered for membership in the ADT. Candidates who won an ADT Teaching Award but who were not the top-scoring candidate in their category may still request consideration for membership in the ADT–they will just not be automatically invited to apply. If the candidate wishes to be considered, their teaching award application materials will be distributed to the entire ADT membership for review and vote at the next monthly meeting. Acceptance into the ADT requires a two-thirds majority vote from the current membership.

Candidates who applied but who did not win an award are not eligible for consideration for membership in the ADT until the next application cycle, unless something substantial about their application changes (e.g., winning of a field-specific teaching award, receival of a large teaching grant, etc.) within that time frame.

  • Nominations (including self-nomination or nomination by a current ADT member, department chair, dean, and/or a colleague): Candidates must submit the following materials in an application for consideration: 1) a letter of interest from the candidate that expresses their reasoning for wanting to join the ADT and acknowledges that joining the ADT will require the workload described at the top of this page; 2) a statement of teaching philosophy; 3) representative teaching evaluations; 4) three letters of recommendation from colleagues that speak to the candidate’s teaching excellence. The application packet will be submitted to the chair of ADT for distribution to the entire ADT membership for review and vote at the next monthly meeting. Acceptance into the ADT requires a two-thirds majority vote from the current membership.
